Wellness Wednesday: Roller coasters

Now this isn't the post I had planned for today, but I have something to say. Today has been a bit of an emotional roller coaster ride. I know I'm not very personal over here. If you knew me in real life, you'd know that is in fact how I am in person- a sort of pseudo-personal. I'm the girl who listens to others problems, provides a shoulder to cry on, and tries to help out. I don't often share my own problems, or show emotion to anyone but family and Anthony. Even in these cases, the emotion is often times false- I'll show anger toward Anthony for an issue in our relationship, when really I'm upset about something else entirely.

Now, I've never frowned upon showing emotion. I have worked in crisis intervention and suicide prevention as well as with certain populations in tough situations which showing emotion is understood, encouraged, and often expected. When I was in training for crisis intervention work, we  spent a good deal of time identifying feeling words. Can you think of how many words their are to describe negative emotion? Hurt, disappointed, betrayed, sad, uneasy, frustrated, upset, and so many more. It can be a challenge to simply identify what it is you're feeling. Then admitting it? That takes strength. I have such a problem showing emotion, that I have several stress related  chronic health conditions that let me know I'm ignoring my emotional state.

Over the year's I've found that most people don't cry because they're weak. They cry because they've simply been strong for too long.

Today my wellness tip is to allow yourself to feel. Allow anger, hurt, and pain. But allow intense happiness, joy, and excitement, too. Accept where you are in this moment, and accept that you may need a minute, a hour, or a day to bring yourself to a point where this can take place.. Take time, and accept you.

What's your go to fix for a long day?

  1. I love this and it is so true. There are lots of people in my family who struggle with this and i've definitely had to work on some of these things too. I know when I do, it definitely helps my relationships. You are amazing for opening up about this.

    1. Thanks Ali! I see a lot of articles or talks on accepting where you are in your life or job, and accepting how you look and such things. Often it seems we forget to accept how we're feeling, which can be equally or even more important.

  2. What a beautiful post. I like what you said about showing your emotions. It's true, sometimes it takes a lot of courage to be open and share your heart with others. It's definitely not easy. I appreciate your honestly in this post and hope you feel better soon. Sometimes identifying the problem seems to be half the battle.

  7. This post rang so true to heart. For the past few years I have had to hold so many emotions in that lately I have found that I must have just cracked. Lately I've been crying over the most littlest of things. It's ridiculous. I guess I just have to be better at not holding in emotions.
