Waxelene: A Petroleum Jelly Alternative

At one point or another, most people have used Vaseline petroleum jelly for one use or another. Well, it contains 45 ingredients. More than half of these took me a minute to pronounce correctly. It also comes in a plastic container, with a plastic lid, and is made from some of the same things plastic is made from. Petroleum, a term encompassing crude oil, natural gas, and asphalt, just doesn't seem like something I want on my face.

Recently, I've had the opportunity to test out Waxelene, a petroleum jelly alternative. Waxelene has only four lovely ingredients: organic soybean oil, natural beeswax, organic rosemary oil, and natural vitamin E oil.

The packaging, as well as the ingredient list, is completely plastic free. It comes in a 2oz or 9oz glass jar. The safety seal is what got me- instead of plastic shrink wrap, they have a little bumble bee sticker. How clever and cute!

When you first open the jar, you'll notice the wonderful honey scent. It is perfect, not too overpowering or overly sweet, but just enough to put a smile on your face. Waxelene has a softer and creamier texture than that of vaseline, which I've always found to be too waxy and slick for my liking.

Now I've been using this product for quite awhile, but you wouldn't know from how little is missing from the jar. You barely need any product for most of the uses.

Speaking of, the list of uses is extensive, and I've been working through it. So far, my favorites are lip balm, eye makeup remover, to tame flyaways, and smooth split ends. I can't wait to try and dab a little on my face skiing or around my collar to protect my neck from my wetsuit!

How I used Waxelene:
For eye makeup remover, I've found it best to smudge some product on my eyes and wipe it off with a cotton ball. It takes much less time that some removers, and doesn't run into my eyes like some products.

As lip balm, I apply once in the morning and once before bed and my lips look fantastic. It doesn't cling to dry spots, and actually improves the look and feel of my lips with just one application. I'm one of those people who gets the worst dry lips when the weather changes- too much time outside combined with blasting the heat in my car! I haven't had even the slightest problem since using waxelene, and it's 32 degrees in Michigan this week.

I've actually found I've been reaching for this jar most for my hair! It works great to tame flyaways and I love to put a little in the loose end of a braid to give a more polished look to my curly hair. I wouldn't recommend putting it directly into your hair, but rub it between your palms then applying just a touch to your trouble strands, similar as you would a pomade.

The short story:
I absolutely love the packaging, and the ingredient list!
The slight honey smell is perfect.
I'm still working through the list of uses, but so far it hasn't failed!
One jar will last quite a long time (even with daily use).

My only complaint: Even the small size (2oz) is a touch too big for carrying around in your pocket or a clutch. Since it would be a perfect emergency product for a night out or adventure day, I would love to see it in an even smaller size as well!

Overall, I can't say enough good things about this product. It has quickly become a stable in my makeup bag, travel case, bathroom, and nightstand. You'll be seeing it around here again, and you can look for it when you get a peak in my travel bag coming up soon!

You can purchase Waxele here, at some whole foods, or bed bath and beyond locations, as well as other in store or online retailers

Have you tried Waxelene? What would you use it for?

  1. You always make the best suggestions!

  2. I absolutely love you for posting this! I'm an Esthetician for Aveda so I am constantly trying to warn people of Vaseline but so many people love it. It's awesome that there's an all natural alternative! I'm totally buying this and recommending this to my clients. Thanks! :)

    1. It's a great product! Personally, I think it works better than Vaseline, but it can be used in all the same ways.

  3. This sounds lovely I love products with Bees Wax in them, never been a fan of vaseline!
