Tooth Time: Natural Toothpaste

Quite some time ago I started using natural toothpaste to brush my pearly whites. I made the switch because I didn't like some of the ingredients in conventional pastes. I've even read that one of the ingredients in "normal" toothpaste could negatively impact a medical condition I am managing. I've been using more natural toothpaste for a year or so, and was thrilled to have the opportunity to try another- Redmond's Earthpaste

*I was sent Earthpaste for review by Redmond. As always, the opinions given are my own. You can read my full disclosure here. Prior to trying Earthpaste, I had been using Tom's of Maine or Jason Sea Fresh toothpastes.

Even some natural toothpastes have a ton of ingredients. In general, the more ingredients, the more likely you are to find something you don't want. Earthpaste, on the other hand, has only six ingredients (and additional essential oils depending on flavor). Their website also lists why they put each one in there! Here's the thing... Earthpaste is so safe to use, you don't have to spit it out, you can just swallow it. (In the interest of full disclosure, I did not actually try swallowing earthpaste. I know the ingredients are safe to do so, but I couldn't get over the mental block of swallowing something that would normally make you sick if you did so!)

When you apply earthpaste to your toothbrush, you'll notice it is a grayish-brown color. It looks like a clay face masks do. I used the same amount as I would any other toothpaste. When you start brushing, the first thing you'll notice is it doesn't foam at all. This took a minute to get used to, but once I was done brushing, my teeth and mouth felt clean and looked good, so I don't mind the difference (especially since foaming agents are often times harmful).

If you've been using natural toothpaste's already, earthpaste will be an easy transition. If you haven't, you'll notice these have a much more mild flavor (my favorite is wintergreen). I like this, but some people have to get over the "if it doesn't burn/sting/overpower it's not working". Earthpaste also has a slight salty flavor, which I found made my mouth feel pretty dry. However, this feeling went away as soon as I rinsed. I do seem to be going through the tube a little quicker than normal, but not by much. The tube also seems a little bigger than some, so I'm thinking it balances out. The important part, though, my teeth felt clean all day. Earthpaste also seemed to do a pretty good job of removing/keeping away surface stains, which is important for those of us who have to have coffee and other staining things! Earthpaste can be purchased here for $7.99.

The Short Story:

-Only six ingredients. It's safe enough to eat!
-Three flavors: cinnamon, peppermint, and wintergreen (new flavors coming soon!)
-Doesn't foam
-A little salty, mild flavor
-Leaves mouth clean and seems to remove surface stains

What do you look for in a toothpaste?

    1. I just made my own homemade toothpaste a couple days ago! We have something like twin telepathy, sister. Mine is a mixture of coconut oil, baking soda, and Dr. Bronner's magic soap. It tastes a little funky, but I'm going to add peppermint for taste. Works great
